Grupa Azoty Koltar expands fleet with zero-emission locomotive

Grupa Azoty Koltar has expanded its fleet with the addition of a zero-emission Dragon 2 electric locomotive, manufactured by Newag S.A. Designed for heavy freight trains, the locomotive meets the highest environmental standards and will help Grupa Azoty reduce CO2 emissions by 580 tons per year.

The anticipated reduction in emissions is based on an annual transport volume of 150,000 tons.

The company secured a preferential loan from the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (WFOŚiGW) in Kraków for the project titled "Purchase of a New Zero-Emission Electric Locomotive for Long-Distance Heavy Train Transport." The loan process is currently underway.

"The acquisition of a zero-emission locomotive is a crucial step in modernizing our railway fleet. We are well aware of the environmental standards we need to meet, including developing our own railway carrier. The new locomotive ensures reliable operation over a wide temperature range and significantly reduces noise levels during use. The built-in intelligent energy management system cuts energy losses by nearly 50%. These features align perfectly with our green strategy," said Andrzej Dawidowski, Vice President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A., responsible for logistics.

The 5MW locomotive, with a maximum tractive force of 450 kN, can independently pull trains weighing over 3,000 tons. Each axle is powered by an asynchronous motor with a power of 842 kW, and the locomotive itself weighs 119 tons.

This new addition will bolster the security of strategic raw material supplies for Grupa Azoty Capital Group companies and create additional jobs in railway-related positions. The high availability of the new locomotive will also increase the share of transports carried out for other Capital Group plants, thereby significantly reducing external service costs and improving the consolidated results of the Capital Group.

"We are commissioning the most advanced locomotive available in the country, symbolizing the positive changes within the company and motivating us to achieve our goals. We are a significant player in the wagon supply and maintenance services market, providing comprehensive shunting services for Grupa Azoty Capital Group sidings, and successfully implementing various railway and maintenance services for external entities. We trust that this purchase will bring numerous benefits to the Capital Group, particularly amidst regulatory challenges related to ESG policies and ETS2 transport requirements, also with the financing method of this investment," said Marcin Dziadowiec, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty Koltar.

"We are delighted to resume our cooperation with Grupa Azoty Koltar after several years, providing them with our flagship product, the Dragon 2 electric locomotive. We believe its reliability and excellent operational parameters will encourage further orders," said Konrad Piotrowski, a representative of NEWAG.

The new locomotive has been named "Roman" in honor of Koltar’s first President, Roman Cyza.
